Approaching Deadline for Filing 2024 Income Tax Returns in Paper Form! What to Watch Out For!

The deadline for submitting income tax returns in paper form for the 2024 tax year is April 1, 2025. Taxpayers who file their returns electronically have until May 2, 2025. If a tax advisor, lawyer, or auditor is submitting the tax return on behalf of a taxpayer, the deadline extends to July 1, 2025.

To assist taxpayers, the Czech Tax Administration has expanded its support services, including consultation hotlines and mobile offices visiting various towns. The MOJE daně portal simplifies electronic filing. Additionally, the tax administration has provided a list of common tax return errors and how to avoid them.

Most Common Errors in Filing Tax Returns

🔸 Incorrect Form or Format

  • Self-employed individuals (OSVČ) with a mandatory data box must file their tax return electronically.

  • PDF submissions are not valid! The correct format is XML, which can be easily generated via the MOJE daně portal.

🔸 Claiming Tax Deductions Incorrectly

  • Child tax credit can be claimed by only one parent.

  • Mortgage interest deductions can only be claimed by the owner of the property, and the property must be used as their permanent residence (or for legally specified close relatives).

🔸 Requesting a Tax Refund
For paper submissions, taxpayers must sign two sections on the last page:
1️⃣ The tax return itself
2️⃣ The request for a tax refund
💡 If filing electronically via MOJE daně, no additional signatures are needed—authentication is done automatically when logging into DIS+. More about how to use DIS+ available in our latest article.

🔸 Reporting Tax-Exempt Income
If you received tax-exempt income exceeding CZK 5 million in 2024, you must notify the tax office. This applies even if you do not need to file a tax return.
📌 Common cases include:

  • Gifts and inheritances

  • Sale of movable assets, securities, or business shares

  • Real estate received as a gift or inheritance worth more than CZK 5 million (except for exempt real estate sales)

❗ Failure to report this income can result in severe penalties.

🔸 Late Filing Penalties

  • If your tax return is filed more than 5 business days late, a penalty of 0.05% of the tax due per day applies (up to 5% of the total tax, max. CZK 300,000).

  • If the tax return is not filed at all, the penalty is 5% of the tax due (minimum CZK 500).
