Tax Return 2024: Deadline for Tax Refunds

Wondering When Your Tax Refund Will Arrive?

Have you filed your tax return long ago but still haven’t received your refund? Are you wondering how long the tax office has to process overpayment refunds?

According to the Tax Code, tax refunds are issued within 30 days from the date the overpayment arises. What does this mean exactly? Here are a few examples:

Filing Deadlines and Refund Timelines

  • Paper Tax Returns Filed Before April 1, 2025: If you submitted your tax return on time, the 30-day period starts after the standard filing deadline. For the 2024 tax year, this means refunds for tax returns filed by April 1, 2025, will be processed by May 2, 2025.

  • Electronic Tax Returns Filed Before April 1, 2025: The same refund timeline applies as for the paper tax returns, i.e. May 2, 2025.
  • Paper Tax Returns Filed After April 1, 2025: If a taxpayer submits a paper tax return after April 1, 2025, the 30-day refund period will begin the day after the return is submitted.

  • Electronic Tax Returns Submitted After April 1, 2025: Taxpayers opting for electronic submission after April 1, 2025, will be subject to the extended deadline of May 2, 2025. As a result, any overpayment refund will be processed within 30 days from this date, no later than June 2, 2025.

  • Tax Returns Submitted After April 1, 2025 through a tax advisor: Taxpayers opting for submission after April 1, 2025 through a tax advisor, will be subject to the extended deadline of July 1, 2025. As a result, any overpayment refund will be processed within 30 days from this date, no later than August 1, 2025.

To receive your refund as soon as possible, it’s always best to file on time—especially electronically, as extended deadlines may delay processing.
